Of Flesh and Fear
  JERRY BROWNING

 ..FOLLOWING SEAS

Of Flesh and Fear

an undeserved
microscopic villain
swims the backstroke
thru our bloodstreams
content to live
and multiply
not caring that greed
and shortsightedness
will destroy his world
and ours

people who know
shun us
as if our mere presence
will turn them to stone…
can’t they understand
only blood and intercourse
imperil

television preachers
call it…god’s wrath
for man’s immorality
the deadly plague
preceding holocaust
then they say He loves us

sometimes i really wonder
did He make man
or did man make Him

morning finds us

contemplating

does the other feel well?

has some scientist

somewhere

discovered a cure

overnight?   but

we won’t fool ourselves

the virus, they say

grows more vicious

with natural sex,

but we won’t use a condom…

what’s an extra year

of sterilized

insecurity

clinging tearfully

we cherish the moments

and literally love each other

to death
