Exposure

the bible says
tempting fate is a sin,
but i feel so alive
so close
to the sacred entity
when i’m hanging
five hundred feet
above the tree tops
by my finger nails

the exposure of a sheer cliff
becomes my cathedral
my confessional
my baptismal
as i perform
an unchoreographed rite
of balance

the slight slip
that rips the air
from my chest
and brings the pounding
rush of blood
to my tingling brain
meters my love of life

when i reach a peak
i feel purged…pure
but, not perfect

for i spit o’r the edge
watch it carry
helplessly to earth
and say to myself
to not tempt fate
is a breathing death
