Let the People Talk
  JERRY BROWNING

 BROKEN COMPASS

Let the People Talk

now that we’ve broken up
i’ve suddenly discovered
everyone knew it wouldn’t last
from the start
except me
how ‘bout you?

we surrounded ourselves
in each other’s arms
and for once
i felt warm
trading tears
learning to laugh

then the tides rose
pulling us under…
we tried to love
with tongue between teeth
waiting for air
but our words formed
a channel
washing the whole
into two tiny islands

yes, i guess it’s over
still i return
to the flowing life
with true understanding
of the shore…
thank you
